11-17-2010 : Anthony Davis in the house

Anthony Davis showed up today at I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement Studios to record his song for the upcoming compilation Anywheresville. In a three hour session, we were able to record basic tracks for 3 songs. The stand-out track is "Beautiful Love" from these sessions. We got a really intimate acoustic sound for this track and Anthony double tracked the vocal while singing in the closet. Hey, it worked. The other tunes we tracked were an instrumental and a miniature version of "Beautiful Love", which will probably be left without vocals as well.

Then, we tackled the Skinny Mulligans' version of "Stairstep To Abandon". Anthony was asked to complete the song by adding a nice guitar solo to the end of the song. We also doubled up Vinny G's rhythm guitar for extra width. I felt the session was going well so I suggested he add two separate solos on the song, rather than just one. Mission accomplished. Anthony is a true pro in the studio.

At the end the session, Anthony and I agreed to begin work on his record. It will be a 5-6 song EP, mostly acoustic in origin. I will be behind the controls for this project and look forward to a winter full of great new music making.

11-14-10 : Skinny Mulligans

I got the chance to record with two guys I had never worked with before on this day. So, to say the least, it was a rather inspiring session. Vinny Giracello and Mark Stephens came to visit me here in Colorado. Vinny and I pulled together a session for a Sunday morning. We pounded out seven tunes in all. Included in the bunch of songs we recorded was Vinny's favorite Outrage song "Stairstep To Abandon". The song dates back to 1985 but Vinny wanted to pay homage.

We got Mark to join us on our version of the Clash's "Garageland". It was awesome to work with Mark after all these years. Our bands had played a bunch of shows together in the past but I never managed to work with him in any other capacity. Flash to 25 years later and Mark Stephens is recording in my basement studio. "One take Stephens" as I called him, lived up to his name. He played the Simonon part spot on. I hope I get to work with Mark again.

The project is called the Skinny Mulligan Experience. Vinny and I are big Gilligan fans so the name is perfect. We will be releasing our version of "Stairstep to Abandon" on the upcoming compilation Anywheresville. Vinny played rhythm guitar and sang lead. I played drums, bass and sang back-up. Anthony Davis will add lead guitar at some point and it will be ready. Great session.
